A friendly club race run by SC Wentorf in the nature reserve just beyond the city boundary. On the 3 km loop you choose anything between 1.5 and 9 km, plus 5 km walking — deliberately small, with a tent village and electronic timing.
Same day as the PSD Bank half marathon — short distances here, the half marathon there.
27 Sun · Sep 35. Volkslauf durch das schöne Alstertal Laufcup 3/3
Along the upper Alsterwanderweg — considerably greener and quieter than the city races. The half marathon is the third scoring race of the Laufcup; with 10 km, 4 km and kids’ races it is a family event as well.

The only hill race in the city: 40 metres of climbing up the Energieberg with a view over the harbour, the Elbe and the skyline. Choose the stair sprint, 5 or 9 km, plus kids’ races — noon to 4 pm, anniversary edition.
24 Sat · Oct 24. Speicherstadtlauf
An evening race at dusk through the Speicherstadt world heritage site and the Kontorhaus quarter, on a 3 km loop from the customs museum. At €12 one of the cheapest races in the city and open to non-members; the 10 km doubles as the Hamburg championship.
Saturday evening — the hella half marathon is the day after, and doing both is possible.
Start times: 4 pm kids’ race · 4:30 pm 3.7 km · 5 pm 10.5 km and relay
25 Sun · Oct hella hamburg halbmarathon
One of the largest half marathons in Germany, straight through the middle of the city. The 2026 edition was moved from summer to October because of a heatwave — cooler conditions, and entries reopened on 12 August.

8 Sun · Nov 50. Süderelbe Halbmarathon durch das Alte Land
The anniversary edition of the HNT classic: from the CU Arena through the Altes Land to Neuenfelde and back — flat, rural and officially certified, so the time counts for rankings.

The cult winter race of SSC Hagen Ahrensburg with over 1,000 runners: 12 km through the forest over moraine hills, a boardwalk across the moor and past the castle ruins. Instead of a medal you get the “Lümmel” at the finish — a sausage. Reachable by U1.

? Frequently asked questions
What running races are there in Hamburg?
48 events are currently listed, 39 of them inside the city. The big ones are the Haspa Marathon Hamburg in April (marathon, half marathon and relay), the Alsterlauf over 10 km in September and the Köhlbrandbrückenlauf in October, the only day of the year the harbour bridge is open to runners. Alongside those run three winter series, several cross-country races and a number of 5K and 10K events.
When is the Hamburg Marathon?
The Haspa Marathon Hamburg takes place in April. Marathon and relay start on Sunday morning, the half marathon in the early afternoon. It is the largest spring marathon in Germany, the course is flat and fast, and the half marathon and relay usually sell out months in advance — the marathon itself normally by late summer. Every date and deadline in this calendar links straight to the organiser.
Which race is a good first one?
A flat 5 or 10 km. In Hamburg the Alsterlauf is the obvious choice, because the course is completely flat and closed to traffic. Smaller and friendlier are the Bramfelder Halbmarathon (which also has 5 and 10 km), the Alstertal-Volkslauf over 4 km, or the Lohelauf in Wentorf, where you can start at 1.5 or 3 km. Better to finish a shorter distance comfortably than to suffer through a long one.
How far in advance should I start training?
As a rough guide: from scratch to 5 km takes eight to twelve weeks, 10 km with some base six to ten, a half marathon twelve to sixteen and a marathon around sixteen to twenty. Consistency matters more than volume — three sessions a week over three months beats six sessions over three weeks.
Do I need to speak German to enter?
For the large events, no. The Haspa Marathon Hamburg and most 10K races have English registration pages and English announcements on the day. Smaller club races are often German only; there the entry form is usually short enough to work through with a translation tool, and organisers answer emails in English.
Can I run races in Hamburg in winter?
Yes — there are three winter series: Bramfeld (five dates, a 4,660 m loop run one to five times), Wilhelmsburg (three dates in the Inselpark, a 5 km loop up to four times) and the SVE series in Stellingen. Add three New Year’s Eve races and, in January, the Lümmellauf, Süderelbe cross-country, Bergedorf cross-country and the Schnelsener Moorlauf. Every date is listed individually here.
How up to date is this calendar?
Every date was checked against the organiser’s own page on 2 Sep 2026. Races without a confirmed date are marked “date to be confirmed” rather than guessed. Each entry links to the organiser — their information is the binding one. Subscribing to the calendar feed means corrections reach you automatically.
